4. 毗波质底经
起源于舍卫城。"比丘们,从前,天神与阿修罗的大战即将爆发。那时,比丘们,阿修罗王毗波质底告诉阿修罗们:'诸位,如果在即将爆发的天神与阿修罗的战争中,阿修罗胜利而天神失败,你们就用五重绳索捆绑帝释天王,把他带到我这里的阿修罗城。'同样,比丘们,帝释天王也告诉三十三天的天神们:'诸位,如果在即将爆发的天神与阿修罗的战争中,天神胜利而阿修罗失败,你们就用五重绳索捆绑阿修罗王毗波质底,把他带到善法堂来。'"
比丘们,在那场战争中,天神胜利了,阿修罗失败了。于是,比丘们,三十三天的天神们用五重绳索捆绑阿修罗王毗波质底,把他带到善法堂帝释天王那里。比丘们,当时被五重绳索捆绑的阿修罗王毗波质底看到帝释天王进出善法堂时,用粗鲁无礼的话辱骂、责骂他。
这时,比丘们,御者摩咤厘用偈颂对帝释天王说:
"因恐惧还是软弱,帝释天主玛伽婆,
面对毗波质底的,辱骂之言仍忍耐?"
帝释天王回答说:
"非因恐惧或软弱,我容忍毗波质底。
如我这般智者怎,会与愚人相争斗?"
摩咤厘说:
"若无人制止愚人,只会变本加厉。
因此智者应严厉,惩戒制止愚者。"
帝释天王回答说:
"我认为这才是真正,制止愚人的方法:
当知对方已发怒,保持冷静方明智。"
摩咤厘说:
"婆娑婆,我看出你的,忍耐有这样的过失:
当愚人认为你是因,恐惧而忍耐他时,
他会更加肆无忌惮,如牛愈逃愈追赶。"
帝释天王回答说:
"让他认为或不认为,我是因恐惧而忍耐。
自利是利益之最,没有比忍辱更好。
强者能忍弱者辱,这才是最高忍辱。
弱者常常被迫忍耐,并非真正的忍辱。
愚人的力量被称弱,守法者的力量无敌。
以怒报怒害更深,不以怒报怒胜难胜。
为己为人皆有益,知他动怒保持静。
两者都在治疗中,不懂正法者说愚。"
"比丘们,帝释天王享受着自己福德的果报,统治着三十三天,却仍然赞美忍辱和温和。在这里,比丘们,你们已经出家,进入如此善说的法与律中,你们更应该保持忍耐和温和。"
5.善语胜利经
起源于舍卫城。"比丘们,从前,天神与阿修罗的大战即将爆发。那时,比丘们,阿修罗王毗波质底对帝释天王说:'天帝,让我们以善语取胜吧。'帝释天王回答说:'毗波质底,就让我们以善语取胜吧。'于是,比丘们,天神和阿修罗们选出评判员,说:'这些人将判断我们的善语与恶语。'
然后,比丘们,阿修罗王毗波质底对帝释天王说:'天帝,请说一首偈颂。'帝释天王回答说:'毗波质底,你们是较早的天神。请你先说一首偈颂吧。'于是,比丘们,毗波质底说了这首偈颂:
"若无人制止愚人,只会变本加厉。

就这样,比丘们,帝释天王以善语取得了胜利。"
6.鸟巢经
在舍卫城。"比丘们,从前,天神与阿修罗的大战爆发了。在那场战争中,阿修罗胜利了,天神失败了。失败的天神向北方撤退,阿修罗追赶他们。
那时,比丘们,帝释天王对御者摩咤厘用偈颂说:
"摩咤厘,木棉树上有鸟巢,
驾车绕过它向北行。
宁可将生命交给阿修罗,
也不愿伤害这些鸟儿的家。"
比丘们,摩咤厘回答说:'遵命,陛下。'然后调转了那辆由千匹骏马拉动的战车。
这时,比丘们,阿修罗们想:'看,帝释天王的千马战车已经调转了方向。天神要第二次与阿修罗作战了。'他们害怕了,就退回到阿修罗城去了。
就这样,比丘们,帝释天王以正法取得了胜利。"
