"诸比丘,观察这五种未来的怖畏,林居比丘就应当精进、热忱、奋发而住,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。
"哪五种呢?诸比丘,在此,林居比丘如是思惟:'我现在独自住在林中。当我独自住在林中时,蛇可能会咬我,蝎子可能会刺我,蜈蚣可能会咬我,因此我可能会死亡,这对我将是一种障碍;来吧!我要发起精进,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。'诸比丘,观察这第一种未来的怖畏,林居比丘就应当精进、热忱、奋发而住,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。
"再者,诸比丘,林居比丘如是思惟:'我现在独自住在林中。当我独自住在林中时,我可能会跌倒摔伤,我所吃的食物可能会不消化,我的胆汁可能会紊乱,我的痰可能会紊乱,我的如刀般锐利的风病可能会发作,因此我可能会死亡,这对我将是一种障碍;来吧!我要发起精进,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。'诸比丘,观察这第二种未来的怖畏,林居比丘就应当精进、热忱、奋发而住,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。

"诸比丘,观察这五种未来的怖畏,比丘就应当精进、热忱、奋发而住,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。哪五种呢?在此,诸比丘,比丘如是思惟:'我现在年少、年轻、黑发、具有健康的青春、处于人生的第一阶段。然而,有一天我的身体将被衰老所侵袭。当被衰老征服、衰弱时,要专注于佛陀的教导就不容易了,要使用偏远森林、荒野的住处也不容易了。在那不喜爱、不可爱、不悦意的法来临之前,我应该预先发起精进,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法,这样即使在年老时我也能由于已成就之法而安乐地生活。'诸比丘,观察这第一种未来的怖畏,比丘就应当精进、热忱、奋发而住,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。
"再者,诸比丘,比丘如是思惟:'我现在少病、少恼、具有良好的消化能力,不太冷也不太热,适中,适合精进。然而,有一天我的身体将被疾病所侵袭。当被疾病征服、病弱时,要专注于佛陀的教导就不容易了,要使用偏远森林、荒野的住处也不容易了。在那不喜爱、不可爱、不悦意的法来临之前,我应该预先发起精进,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法,这样即使在生病时我也能由于已成就之法而安乐地生活。'诸比丘,观察这第二种未来的怖畏,比丘就应当精进、热忱、奋发而住,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。
"再者,诸比丘,比丘如是思惟:'现在是丰收时期,粮食充足,容易获得施食,通过托钵乞食易于维持生活。然而,有一天会有饥荒,收成不好,难以获得施食,通过托钵乞食难以维持生活。在饥荒时期,人们会迁移到有食物的地方。在那里,人们会群居,生活拥挤。当群居、生活拥挤时,要专注于佛陀的教导就不容易了,要使用偏远森林、荒野的住处也不容易了。在那不喜爱、不可爱、不悦意的法来临之前,我应该预先发起精进,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法,这样即使在饥荒时期我也能由于已成就之法而安乐地生活。'诸比丘,观察这第三种未来的怖畏,比丘就应当精进、热忱、奋发而住,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。
"再者,诸比丘,比丘如是思惟:'现在人们和睦相处,互相友善,不争不吵,如水乳交融,以亲爱的眼光互相看待。然而,有一天会有危险,会有森林的动乱,人们会乘坐战车、牛车四处逃命。在危险时期,人们会迁移到安全的地方。在那里,人们会群居,生活拥挤。当群居、生活拥挤时,要专注于佛陀的教导就不容易了,要使用偏远森林、荒野的住处也不容易了。在那不喜爱、不可爱、不悦意的法来临之前,我应该预先发起精进,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法,这样即使在危险时期我也能由于已成就之法而安乐地生活。'诸比丘,观察这第四种未来的怖畏,比丘就应当精进、热忱、奋发而住,为了证得未证得之法,成就未成就之法,实现未实现之法。

“Katamāni pañca? Idha, bhikkhave, āraññiko bhikkhu iti paṭisañcikkhati– ‘ahaṃ kho etarahi ekako araññe viharāmi.
