那时,游行者波塔利耶来到世尊处。来到后,与世尊互相问候。互相问候和友好交谈后,坐在一旁。世尊对坐在一旁的波塔利耶游行者说道:


"波塔利耶,世间有这四种人存在。哪四种?此处,波塔利耶,某人在适当时候说应受责备者的真实过失,但不在适当时候说应受赞扬者的真实功德。此处,波塔利耶,某人在适当时候说应受赞扬者的真实功德,但不在适当时候说应受责备者的真实过失。此处,波塔利耶,某人既不在适当时候说应受责备者的真实过失,也不在适当时候说应受赞扬者的真实功德。此处,波塔利耶,某人在适当时候既说应受责备者的真实过失,也说应受赞扬者的真实功德。波塔利耶,这就是世间存在的四种人。波塔利耶,在这四种人中,你认为哪一种人最殊胜、最优秀?"


"尊者乔达摩,世间有这四种人存在。哪四种?此处,尊者乔达摩,某人在适当时候说应受责备者的真实过失,但不在适当时候说应受赞扬者的真实功德。此处,尊者乔达摩,某人在适当时候说应受赞扬者的真实功德,但不在适当时候说应受责备者的真实过失。此处,尊者乔达摩,某人既不在适当时候说应受责备者的真实过失,也不在适当时候说应受赞扬者的真实功德。此处,尊者乔达摩,某人在适当时候既说应受责备者的真实过失,也说应受赞扬者的真实功德。尊者乔达摩,这就是世间存在的四种人。尊者乔达摩,在这四种人中,我认为那个既不在适当时候说应受责备者的真实过失,也不在适当时候说应受赞扬者的真实功德的人最为殊胜、最为优秀。为什么?因为这种平等心是最殊胜的。"


"波塔利耶,世间有这四种人存在。哪四种...(略)...这就是世间存在的四种人。波塔利耶,在这四种人中,那个在适当时候既说应受责备者的真实过失,也说应受赞扬者的真实功德的人,是这四种人中最殊胜、最优秀的。为什么?因为波塔利耶,在各种场合知晓适当时机是最殊胜的。"


"尊者乔达摩,世间有这四种人存在。哪四种...(略)...这就是世间存在的四种人。尊者乔达摩,在这四种人中,那个在适当时候既说应受责备者的真实过失,也说应受赞扬者的真实功德的人,我认为是这四种人中最殊胜、最优秀的。为什么?因为尊者乔达摩,在各种场合知晓适当时机是最殊胜的。"


"太殊胜了,尊者乔达摩!太殊胜了,尊者乔达摩!就像扶起倒下的东西,揭开遮蔽的东西,为迷路者指明道路,在黑暗中举起油灯,使有眼者得见诸色。同样地,尊者乔达摩以种种方便开示法义。我今归依尊者乔达摩、归依法、归依比丘僧。愿尊者乔达摩接受我为优婆塞,从今日起乃至命终归依。"

如是我闻:一时,世尊住舍卫城祇树给孤独园。在那里,世尊呼唤比丘们:"诸比丘。""大德。"那些比丘应答世尊。世尊如是说:


"诸比丘,有四种云。是哪四种?打雷而不下雨者,下雨而不打雷者,既不打雷也不下雨者,既打雷又下雨者。诸比丘,这就是四种云。同样地,诸比丘,世间有四种如云之人存在。是哪四种?打雷而不下雨者,下雨而不打雷者,既不打雷也不下雨者,既打雷又下雨者。"


"诸比丘,云何为打雷而不下雨之人?此处,诸比丘,某人是说者而非行者。诸比丘,如是为打雷而不下雨之人。诸比丘,就如那打雷而不下雨之云;诸比丘,我说此人亦复如是。"


"诸比丘,云何为下雨而不打雷之人?此处,诸比丘,某人是行者而非说者。诸比丘,如是为下雨而不打雷之人。诸比丘,就如那下雨而不打雷之云;诸比丘,我说此人亦复如是。"


"诸比丘,云何为既不打雷也不下雨之人?此处,诸比丘,某人既非说者也非行者。诸比丘,如是为既不打雷也不下雨之人。诸比丘,就如那既不打雷也不下雨之云;诸比丘,我说此人亦复如是。"


"诸比丘,云何为既打雷又下雨之人?此处,诸比丘,某人既是说者也是行者。诸比丘,如是为既打雷又下雨之人。诸比丘,就如那既打雷又下雨之云;诸比丘,我说此人亦复如是。诸比丘,这就是世间存在的四种如云之人。"

   100. Atha kho potaliyo paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinnaṃ kho potaliyaṃ paribbājakaṃ bhagavā etadavoca–

   “Cattārome, potaliya, puggalā santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmiṃ. Katame cattāro? Idha, potaliya, ekacco puggalo avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṃ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ kālena, no ca kho vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṃ bhāsitā hoti bhūtaṃ tacchaṃ kālena. Upāsakaṃ maṃ bhavaṃ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṃ saraṇaṃ gatan”ti. Dasamaṃ.

   101. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi– “bhikkhavo”ti. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca–

   “Cattārome, bhikkhave, valāhakā. Katame cattāro? Gajjitā no vassitā, vassitā no gajjitā, neva gajjitā no vassitā, gajjitā ca vassitā ca. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro valāhakā. Evamevaṃ kho, bhikkhave, cattāro valāhakūpamā puggalā santo saṃvijjamānā lokasmiṃ. Katame cattāro? Gajjitā no vassitā, vassitā no gajjitā, neva gajjitā no vassitā, gajjitā ca vassitā ca.
