151 根经
“诸比丘,有此四种根。是哪四种呢?信根、精进根、念根、定根。诸比丘,这些就是四种根。”第一。
152 信力经
“诸比丘,有此四种力。是哪四种呢?信力、精进力、念力、定力。诸比丘,这些就是四种力。”第二。
153 慧力经
“诸比丘,有此四种力。是哪四种呢?慧力、精进力、无罪力、摄受力。诸比丘,这些就是四种力。”第三。
154 念力经
“诸比丘,有此四种力。是哪四种呢?念力、定力、无罪力、摄受力。诸比丘,这些就是四种力。”第四。
155 审察力经
“诸比丘,有此四种力。是哪四种呢?审察力、修习力、无罪力、摄受力。诸比丘,这些就是四种力。”第五。
156 劫经
“诸比丘,有此四种劫的不可计量(时间)。是哪四种呢?
“诸比丘,当劫正在坏灭时,不容易计算(说):‘这么多年来’或‘这么多百年来’或‘这么多千年来’或‘这么多十万年来’。
“诸比丘,当劫已坏灭而住立时,不容易计算(说):‘这么多年来’或‘这么多百年来’或‘这么多千年来’或‘这么多十万年来’。
“诸比丘,当劫正在形成时,不容易计算(说):‘这么多年来’或‘这么多百年来’或‘这么多千年来’或‘这么多十万年来’。
“诸比丘,当劫已形成而住立时,不容易计算(说):‘这么多年来’或‘这么多百年来’或‘这么多千年来’或‘这么多十万年来’。诸比丘,这些就是四种劫的不可计量(时间)。”第六。
157 病经
“诸比丘,有此二种病。是哪二种呢?身体的病和心的病。
“诸比丘,可见有众生宣称一年无身体的病,宣称两年无身体的病,宣称三年无身体的病,宣称四年无身体的病,宣称五年无身体的病,宣称十年无身体的病,宣称二十年无身体的病,宣称三十年无身体的病,宣称四十年无身体的病,宣称五十年无身体的病,宣称一百年,或更久宣称无病。
“诸比丘,那些众生,在此世间极难得,他们能宣称即使片刻无心病的,除了诸漏尽者(阿罗汉)以外。
“诸比丘,有此四种出家者的病。是哪四种呢?
“诸比丘,于此,比丘有大欲、有苦恼、不满足于各种衣、食、住、药、医疗用品。他由于有大欲、有苦恼、不满足于各种衣、食、住、药、医疗用品,而希求恶欲:为了获得尊重,为了获得利养、恭敬、名誉。他起身、努力、精进:为了获得尊重,为了获得利养、恭敬、名誉。他审察(选择性地)前往家庭,审察(选择性地)坐下,审察(选择性地)说法,审察(选择性地)忍住大小便。
“诸比丘,这些就是四种出家者的病。
“诸比丘,因此,你们应当这样学习:‘我们不要有大欲、不要有苦恼、不要不满足于各种衣、食、住、药、医疗用品,我们不要希求恶欲:为了获得尊重,为了获得利养、恭敬、名誉,我们不要起身、不要努力、不要精进:为了获得尊重,为了获得利养、恭敬、名誉,我们要忍耐寒冷、炎热、饥饿、口渴,蚊、蝇、风、日晒、蛇(爬虫)的接触,粗恶、不善的言语,我们要忍耐生起的身体上的苦受:剧烈的、尖锐的、残酷的、辛辣的、不愉快的、不可意的、夺命般的(痛苦),成为有忍耐力者。’
“诸比丘,你们应当这样学习。”第七。
158 衰退经
那时,具寿舍利弗对比丘们说:“贤友们,比丘们!”
那些比丘回应具寿舍利弗:“大德!”
具寿舍利弗这么说:
“贤友们,任何比丘或比丘尼,若于自己身上发现四种法,于此应得结论:‘我从善法衰退了。’这是世尊所说的衰退。是哪四种呢?贪欲增强、瞋恚增强、愚痴增强,而且于甚深处的适当地与不适当之处,他的慧眼不转向(不能洞察)。
“贤友们,任何比丘或比丘尼,若于自己身上发现这四种法,于此应得结论:‘我从善法衰退了。’这是世尊所说的衰退。
“贤友们,任何比丘或比丘尼,若于自己身上发现四种法,于此应得结论:‘我没有从善法衰退。’这是世尊所说的不衰退。是哪四种呢?贪欲减弱、瞋恚减弱、愚痴减弱,而且于甚深处的适当地与不适当之处,他的慧眼转向(能够洞察)。
“贤友们,任何比丘或比丘尼,若于自己身上发现这四种法,于此应得结论:‘我没有从善法衰退。’这是世尊所说的不衰退。”第八。

So mahiccho samāno vighātavā asantuṭṭho itarītaracīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārena pāpikaṃ icchaṃ paṇidahati anavaññappaṭilābhāya lābhasakkārasilokappaṭilābhāya. So uṭṭhahati ghaṭati vāyamati anavaññappaṭilābhāya lābhasakkārasilokappaṭilābhāya. So saṅkhāya kulāni upasaṅkamati, saṅkhāya nisīdati, saṅkhāya dhammaṃ bhāsati, saṅkhāya uccārapassāvaṃ sandhāreti. “Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘na mahicchā bhavissāma vighātavanto asantuṭṭhā itarītaracīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajja-parikkhārena, na pāpikaṃ icchaṃ paṇidahissāma anavaññappaṭilābhāya lābhasakkārasilokappaṭilābhāya, na uṭṭhahissāma na ghaṭessāma na vāyamissāma anavaññappaṭilābhāya lābhasakkārasilokappaṭilābhāya, khamā bhavissāma sītassa uṇhassa jighacchāya pipāsāya ḍaṃsamakasavātātapasarīsapasamphassānaṃ duruttānaṃ durāgatānaṃ vacanapathānaṃ, uppannānaṃ sārīrikānaṃ vedanānaṃ dukkhānaṃ tibbānaṃ kharānaṃ kaṭukānaṃ asātānaṃ amanāpānaṃ pāṇaharānaṃ adhivāsakajātikā bhavissāmā’ti. 158. Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi– “āvuso bhikkhave”ti “Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṃ. Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca–
“Yo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā cattāro dhamme attani samanupassati, niṭṭhamettha gantabbaṃ– ‘parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehi’. Parihānametaṃ vuttaṃ bhagavatā. Katame cattāro? Rāgavepullattaṃ, dosavepullattaṃ, mohavepullattaṃ, gambhīresu kho panassa ṭhānāṭhānesu paññācakkhu na kamati. Yo hi koci, āvuso, bhikkhu vā bhikkhunī vā ime cattāro dhamme attani samanupassati, niṭṭhamettha gantabbaṃ– ‘parihāyāmi kusalehi dhammehi’. Parihānametaṃ vuttaṃ bhagavatā.
