这是我亲身听闻到的:一时,世尊住舍卫城祇树给孤独园。那时,给孤独长者患病,痛苦,重病。
于是给孤独长者召唤一个人说:"来吧,善男子,你去世尊那里,到了之后,以我的名义顶礼世尊双足,说:'尊者,给孤独长者患病,痛苦,重病。他顶礼世尊双足。'然后去尊者舍利弗那里,到了之后,以我的名义顶礼尊者舍利弗双足,说:'尊者,给孤独长者患病,痛苦,重病。他顶礼尊者舍利弗双足。'然后这样说:'善哉,尊者,请尊者舍利弗出于慈悲,到给孤独长者家里来。'"
"是,尊者。"那人回答给孤独长者后,就去世尊那里。到了之后,向世尊礼拜,坐在一旁。坐在一旁的那人对世尊说:"尊者,给孤独长者患病,痛苦,重病。他顶礼世尊双足。"然后去尊者舍利弗那里。到了之后,向尊者舍利弗礼拜,坐在一旁。坐在一旁的那人对尊者舍利弗说:"尊者,给孤独长者患病,痛苦,重病。他顶礼尊者舍利弗双足。他这样说:'善哉,尊者,请尊者舍利弗出于慈悲,到给孤独长者家里来。'"尊者舍利弗默然应允。
于是尊者舍利弗穿好衣服,拿着钵和衣,与尊者阿难作为随从,来到给孤独长者家。到了之后,坐在准备好的座位上。坐下后,尊者舍利弗对给孤独长者说:"长者,你还好吗?能忍受吗?痛苦减轻了吗,没有加重吗?有减轻的迹象,没有加重的迹象吗?"
"尊者舍利弗,我不好,不能忍受。剧烈的痛苦在加重,不见减轻;有加重的迹象,没有减轻的迹象。尊者舍利弗,就像有力气的人用尖锐的剑刺我的头顶,我的头痛就是这样剧烈。尊者舍利弗,我不好,不能忍受。剧烈的痛苦在加重,不见减轻;有加重的迹象,没有减轻的迹象。尊者舍利弗,就像有力气的人用结实的皮带勒紧我的头,我的头痛就是这样剧烈。尊者舍利弗,我不好,不能忍受。剧烈的痛苦在加重,不见减轻;有加重的迹象,没有减轻的迹象。尊者舍利弗,就像熟练的屠夫或屠夫的学徒用锋利的屠刀剖开我的腹部,我的腹痛就是这样剧烈。尊者舍利弗,我不好,不能忍受。剧烈的痛苦在加重,不见减轻;有加重的迹象,没有减轻的迹象。尊者舍利弗,就像两个力士抓住一个弱小的人,在炭火坑上烤他,我全身的灼热就是这样剧烈。尊者舍利弗,我不好,不能忍受。剧烈的痛苦在加重,不见减轻;有加重的迹象,没有减轻的迹象。"
"因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著眼,我的识不依眼而生。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著耳,我的识不依耳而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著鼻,我的识不依鼻而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著舌,我的识不依舌而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著身,我的识不依身而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著意,我的识不依意而生。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著色(色解释:物质事物,物质身体),我的识不依色而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著声...我不执著香...我不执著味...我不执著触...我不执著法(法即是法尘:法尘解释:六尘之一,法尘是意根所缘的境界,意根对前五根所缘的境界,分别好丑,而起善恶诸法,是名法尘。吾人日常动作,虽已过去,而前尘影事,忆念不忘,即是法尘的作用),我的识不依法而生。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著眼识(六识解释,见第一百八十八章),我的识不依眼识而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著耳识...我不执著鼻识...我不执著舌识...我不执著身识...我不执著意识,我的识不依意识而生。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著眼触(六触解释:即是眼触、耳触、鼻触、舌触、身触、意触,六触解释,见第一百八十九章),我的识不依眼触而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著耳触...我不执著鼻触...我不执著舌触...我不执著身触...我不执著意触,我的识不依意触而生。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著眼触所生受(受解释:感受),我的识不依眼触所生受而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著耳触所生受...我不执著鼻触所生受...我不执著舌触所生受...我不执著身触所生受...我不执著意触所生受,我的识不依意触所生受而生。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著地界,我的识不依地界而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著水界...我不执著火界...我不执著风界...我不执著空界...我不执著识界,我的识不依识界而生(地界、水界、火界、风界解释,见第一百二十四章;空界、识界解释,见第一百九十四章)。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著色,我的识不依色而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著受...我不执著想...我不执著行...我不执著识,我的识不依识而生。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著空无边处(空无边处解释,见第一百五十五章),我的识不依空无边处而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著识无边处...我不执著无所有处...我不执著非想非非想处,我的识不依非想非非想处而生(识无边处,无所有处,非想非非想处解释,见第一百五十五章)。'长者,你应该这样学。
因此,长者,你应该这样学:'我不执著此世,我的识不依此世而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著他世,我的识不依他世而生。'长者,你应该这样学。'我不执著所见、所闻、所觉、所识、所得、所求、所思维的,我的识不依那些而生。'长者,你应该这样学。"
说到这里,给孤独长者哭泣流泪。于是尊者阿难对给孤独长者说:"长者,你退缩了吗?你沉沦了吗?"
"尊者阿难,我没有退缩,也没有沉沦。但是我长期侍奉世尊和可敬的比丘们,却从未听过这样的法语。"
"长者,这样的法语不对在家白衣信众说(白衣解释:居士),而是对出家人说的。"
"那么,尊者舍利弗,请也对在家白衣信众说这样的法语。因为,尊者,有些善男子尘垢很少,由于不听法而退失。会有人能了知法的。"
于是尊者舍利弗和尊者阿难以这样的教诫教导给孤独长者后,从座位起身离去。给孤独长者在尊者舍利弗和尊者阿难离去不久后去世,往生兜率天(兜率天解释:又作都率天、兜术天、兜率陀天、兜率多天、兜师陀天、睹史多天、兜驶多天。意译知足天、妙足天、喜足天、喜乐天。与夜摩天合称为兜夜。乃欲界六天之第四天,位于夜摩天与乐变化天之间,距夜摩天十六万由旬,在虚空密云之上,纵广八万由旬。关于此天之名,立世阿毗昙论卷六谓,欢乐饱满,于其资具满足,于八圣道不生知足,故称为兜率陀天。佛地经论卷五则谓,后身菩萨于中教化,多修喜足,故称为喜足天。此天有内外两院,兜率内院乃即将成佛者(即补处菩萨)之居处,今则为弥勒菩萨之净土;弥勒现亦为补处菩萨,于此宣说佛法,若住此天满四千岁,即下生人间,成佛于龙华树下。又昔时释迦如来身为菩萨时,亦从此天下生人间而成佛)。
然后,给孤独天子在深夜里,以殊胜的容色照亮整个祇园,来到世尊那里。到了之后,向世尊礼拜,站在一旁。站在一旁的给孤独天子以偈颂对世尊说:
"这祇树园,圣贤众所居,
法王所住,令我生欢喜。
业(业解释:是指一个人的行为,身、口、意所产生的能量或力量,每个行为都会产生相应的结果,善行产生善果,恶行产生恶果,影响个人的性格、处境、际遇等,可能延续到来世,影响轮回)、明、法及戒,最上的生活,
人以此清净,非以种姓财。
是故智者,观察自身利,
如理择法,如是于此净。
舍利弗以慧,以戒与寂静,
比丘到彼岸,至多也如此。"
给孤独天子说了这些。导师表示赞同。于是给孤独天子想:"导师赞同我",就向世尊礼拜,右绕后消失在那里。
然后,世尊在那夜过后召集比丘们说:"比丘们,昨夜有一位天子在深夜里,以殊胜的容色照亮整个祇园,来到我这里。到了之后,向我礼拜,站在一旁。站在一旁的那位天子以偈颂对我说:
"这祇树园,圣贤众所居,
法王所住,令我生欢喜。
业、明、法及戒,最上的生活,
人以此清净,非以种姓财。
是故智者,观察自身利,
如理择法,如是于此净。
舍利弗以慧,以戒与寂静,
比丘到彼岸,至多也如此。"
"比丘们,那位天子说了这些。'导师赞同我',就向我礼拜,右绕后消失在那里。"
说到这里,尊者阿难对世尊说:"尊者,那一定是给孤独天子。尊者,给孤独长者对尊者舍利弗非常信仰。"
"善哉,善哉,阿难!你已经达到推理所能达到的。阿难,那正是给孤独天子。"
世尊说了这些。尊者阿难欢喜、随喜世尊所说。

383. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Tena kho pana samayena anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati aññataraṃ purisaṃ āmantesi– “ehi tvaṃ, ambho purisa, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā mama vacanena bhagavato pāde sirasā vandāhi – ‘anāthapiṇḍiko, bhante, gahapati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. So bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī’ti. Yena cāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā mama vacanena āyasmato sāriputtassa pāde sirasā vandāhi – ‘anāthapiṇḍiko, bhante, gahapati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. So āyasmato sāriputtassa pāde sirasā vandatī’ti. Evañca vadehi– ‘sādhu kira, bhante, āyasmā sāriputto yena anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa nivesanaṃ tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṃ upādāyā’”ti.
“Evaṃ, bhante”ti kho so puriso anāthapiṇḍikassa gahapatissa paṭissutvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho so puriso bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “anāthapiṇḍiko, bhante, gahapati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. So bhagavato pāde sirasā vandatī”ti. Yena cāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Nisajja kho āyasmā sāriputto anāthapiṇḍikaṃ gahapatiṃ etadavoca– “kacci te, gahapati, khamanīyaṃ, kacci yāpanīyaṃ? Kacci te dukkhā vedanā paṭikkamanti, no abhikkamanti; paṭikkamosānaṃ paññāyati, no abhikkamo”ti?
“Na me, bhante sāriputta, khamanīyaṃ na yāpanīyaṃ. Bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā abhikkamanti, no paṭikkamanti; abhikkamosānaṃ paññāyati, no paṭikkamo. Seyyathāpi, bhante sāriputta, balavā puriso tiṇhena sikharena muddhani abhimattheyya; evameva kho me, bhante sāriputta, adhimattā vātā muddhani ūhananti. Na me, bhante sāriputta, khamanīyaṃ na yāpanīyaṃ. Bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā abhikkamanti, no paṭikkamanti; abhikkamosānaṃ paññāyati, no paṭikkamo. “Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘na sotaṃ upādiyissāmi, na ca me sotanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti. Evañhi te, gahapati, sikkhitabbaṃ. Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘na āpodhātuṃ upādiyissāmi… na tejodhātuṃ upādiyissāmi… na vāyodhātuṃ upādiyissāmi… na ākāsadhātuṃ upādiyissāmi… na viññāṇadhātuṃ upādiyissāmi, na ca me viññāṇadhātunissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti. Evañhi te, gahapati, sikkhitabbaṃ.
“Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘na rūpaṃ upādiyissāmi, na ca me rūpanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti. Evañhi te, gahapati, sikkhitabbaṃ. Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘na vedanaṃ upādiyissāmi… na saññaṃ upādiyissāmi… na saṅkhāre upādiyissāmi… na viññāṇaṃ upādiyissāmi, na ca me viññāṇanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti. “Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘na ākāsānañcāyatanaṃ upādiyissāmi na ca me ākāsānañcāyatananissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti Evañhi te, gahapati, sikkhitabbaṃ. Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ – ‘na viññāṇañcāyatanaṃ upādiyissāmi… na ākiñcaññāyatanaṃ upādiyissāmi… na nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṃ upādiyissāmi na ca me nevasaññānāsaññāyatananissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti. Evañhi te, gahapati, sikkhitabbaṃ.
“Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘na idhalokaṃ upādiyissāmi, na ca me idhalokanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti. Evañhi te, gahapati, sikkhitabbaṃ. Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘na paralokaṃ upādiyissāmi, na ca me paralokanissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti. Evañhi te, gahapati, sikkhitabbaṃ. Tasmātiha te, gahapati, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ– ‘yampi me diṭṭhaṃ sutaṃ mutaṃ viññātaṃ pattaṃ pariyesitaṃ anupariyesitaṃ anucaritaṃ manasā tampi na upādiyissāmi, na ca me taṃnissitaṃ viññāṇaṃ bhavissatī’ti. 387. Evaṃ vutte, anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati parodi, assūni pavattesi. Atha kho āyasmā ānando anāthapiṇḍikaṃ gahapatiṃ etadavoca– “olīyasi kho tvaṃ, gahapati, saṃsīdasi kho tvaṃ, gahapatī”ti? “Nāhaṃ, bhante ānanda, olīyāmi, napi saṃsīdāmi; api ca me dīgharattaṃ satthā payirupāsito manobhāvanīyā ca bhikkhū; na ca me evarūpī dhammī kathā sutapubbā”ti. “Na kho, gahapati, gihīnaṃ odātavasanānaṃ evarūpī dhammī kathā paṭibhāti; pabbajitānaṃ kho, gahapati, evarūpī dhammī kathā paṭibhātī”ti. “Tena hi, bhante sāriputta, gihīnampi odātavasanānaṃ evarūpī dhammī kathā paṭibhātu. Santi hi, bhante, kulaputtā apparajakkhajātikā, assavanatā dhammassa parihāyanti; bhavissanti dhammassa aññātāro”ti.
Atha kho āyasmā ca sāriputto āyasmā ca ānando anāthapiṇḍikaṃ gahapatiṃ iminā ovādena ovaditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkamiṃsu. Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati, acirapakkante āyasmante ca sāriputte āyasmante ca ānande kālamakāsi tusitaṃ kāyaṃ upapajji. Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṃ jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhito kho anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto bhagavantaṃ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi–
“Idañhi taṃ jetavanaṃ, isisaṅghanisevitaṃ;
Āvutthaṃ dhammarājena, pītisañjananaṃ mama.
“Kammaṃ vijjā ca dhammo ca, sīlaṃ jīvitamuttamaṃ;
Etena maccā sujjhanti, na gottena dhanena vā.
“Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso, sampassaṃ atthamattano;
Yoniso vicine dhammaṃ, evaṃ tattha visujjhati.
“Sāriputtova paññāya, sīlena upasamena;
Yopi pāraṅgato bhikkhu, etāvaparamo siyā”ti.
Idamavoca anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto. Samanuñño satthā ahosi. Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto– “samanuñño me satthā”ti bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṃ katvā tatthevantaradhāyi.
388. Atha kho bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena bhikkhū āmantesi– “imaṃ, bhikkhave, rattiṃ aññataro devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṃ jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yenāhaṃ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā maṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṃ ṭhito kho so devaputto maṃ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi–
“Idañhi taṃ jetavanaṃ, isisaṅghanisevitaṃ;

Evaṃ vutte, āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “so hi nūna so, bhante, anāthapiṇḍiko devaputto bhavissati. Anāthapiṇḍiko, bhante, gahapati āyasmante sāriputte abhippasanno ahosī”ti. “Sādhu, sādhu, ānanda! Yāvatakaṃ kho, ānanda, takkāya pattabbaṃ, anuppattaṃ taṃ tayā. Anāthapiṇḍiko so, ānanda, devaputto”ti.
Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamano āyasmā ānando bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandīti.
Anāthapiṇḍikovādasuttaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ paṭhamaṃ.
