这是我亲身听闻到的。一时,世尊住舍卫城东园鹿母讲堂,与众多著名的上座弟子在一起 - 尊者舍利弗、尊者大目犍连、尊者大迦叶、尊者大迦旃延、尊者大拘絺罗、尊者大劫宾那、尊者大周陀、尊者阿那律、尊者离婆多、尊者阿难,以及其他著名的上座弟子。


那时,上座比丘们教导、训诫新比丘。有些上座比丘教导、训诫十位比丘,有些上座比丘教导、训诫二十位比丘,有些上座比丘教导、训诫三十位比丘,有些上座比丘教导、训诫四十位比丘。那些新比丘在上座比丘们的教导、训诫下,逐渐获得殊胜的智见。


当时正值月圆之夜,布萨日自恣之时(布萨解释:译曰净住,善宿,又曰长养。出家之法,每半月(十五日与廿九日或三十日),集众僧说戒经,使比丘住于净戒中。能长养善法,又在家之法,于六斋日持八戒而增长善法,谓之布萨。因而就所作之法,谓之说戒或八戒。就其功能则曰布萨),世尊坐在露地,比丘僧众围绕着他。世尊环顾寂静的比丘僧众,告诉比丘们说:"诸比丘,我对这修行之道感到满意;诸比丘,我对这修行之道感到心满意足。因此,诸比丘,你们应当更加精进,为了证得未证之法、获得未获之法、实现未实现之法。我将在这里舍卫城度过四个月的雨安居(雨安居解释:夏安居、雨安居、坐夏、夏坐、结夏、坐腊、一夏九旬、九旬禁足、结制安居、结制。印度夏季之雨期达三月之久。此三个月间,出家人禁止外出而聚居一处以致力修行,称为安居。此系唯恐雨季期间外出,踩杀地面之虫类及草树之新芽,招引世讥,故聚集修行,避免外出),直到迦提迦月的满月日。"


各地的比丘听说:"世尊将在舍卫城度过四个月的雨安居,直到迦提迦月的满月日。"他们纷纷来到舍卫城见世尊。那些上座比丘更加努力地教导、训诫新比丘。有些上座比丘教导、训诫十位比丘,有些上座比丘教导、训诫二十位比丘,有些上座比丘教导、训诫三十位比丘,有些上座比丘教导、训诫四十位比丘。那些新比丘在上座比丘们的教导、训诫下,逐渐获得殊胜的智见。


当时正值迦提迦月满月之夜,布萨日结束雨安居的时候,世尊坐在露地,比丘僧众围绕着他。世尊环顾寂静的比丘僧众,告诉比丘们说:"诸比丘,这个僧团没有废话;诸比丘,这个僧团没有闲言碎语;这个僧团是纯净的,安住于精华之中。诸比丘,这样的比丘僧团,这样的僧众,是值得供养、值得款待、值得布施、值得合掌礼敬的,是世间无上的福田。诸比丘,这样的比丘僧团,这样的僧众,即使给予少许也能获得很多,给予很多则能获得更多。诸比丘,这样的比丘僧团,这样的僧众,是世间难得一见的。诸比丘,这样的比丘僧团,这样的僧众,值得人们带着食物走很远的路来看望。"


"诸比丘,在这个比丘僧团中,有些比丘是阿罗汉,漏尽(漏尽解释:烦恼已经灭尽),所作已办,放下重担,达到自己的目标,断尽有结(结解释:烦恼;有结解释:对有的执着烦恼,对存在的执着烦恼),正确地解脱 - 诸比丘,这样的比丘存在于这个比丘僧团中。诸比丘,在这个比丘僧团中,有些比丘断尽了五下分结,是化生者,将在那里般涅槃(五下分结解释,见第六百五十七章;化生解释:本无而忽生之意。即无所依托,借业力而出现者。凡化生者,不缺诸根支分,死亦不留其遗形,即所谓顿生而顿灭,故于四生中亦最胜。化生者,皆以爱染当生处而受其生;般涅槃解释:进入最后的涅槃境界,不再生死轮回;生死轮回解释,见第五百七十八章),不再从那个世界回来 - 诸比丘,这样的比丘存在于这个比丘僧团中。诸比丘,在这个比丘僧团中,有些比丘断尽了三结(三结解释,见第九百二十六章),减少了贪、嗔、痴,是一来者,还要再来这个世界一次就能终结苦 - 诸比丘,这样的比丘存在于这个比丘僧团中。诸比丘,在这个比丘僧团中,有些比丘断尽了三结,是入流者,不堕恶趣,决定趣向正觉 - 诸比丘,这样的比丘存在于这个比丘僧团中。"

诸比丘,修习、多修入出息念,能产生大果、大利益。诸比丘,修习、多修入出息念,能圆满四念处。修习、多修四念处,能圆满七觉支。修习、多修七觉支,能圆满明与解脱。


"诸比丘,如何修习入出息念?如何多修入出息念才能产生大果、大利益?在这里,诸比丘,比丘到林野、树下或空闲处,结跏趺坐(结跏趺坐解释:坐法之一。又作结加趺坐、结跏跗坐、跏趺正坐、跏趺坐、加趺坐、跏坐、结坐。即互交二足,结跏安坐。又称交一足为半跏趺坐、半跏坐、半跏、贤坐;称交二足为全跏坐、本跏坐、全跏、大坐、莲华坐。其坐法即双膝弯曲,两足掌向上之形式,可分为降魔、吉祥二种:1.先以右足压左股,后以左足压右股,二足掌仰于二股之上,手亦左手居上,称为降魔坐。天台、禅宗等显教诸宗多传此坐。2.先以左足压右股,后以右足压左股,手亦右手压左手,称为吉祥坐。密宗亦称之为莲花坐。如来于菩提树下成正觉时,身安吉祥之坐,手作降魔印。此多于密教中行之,盖以右足表示佛界,左足表示众生界。以右足压左足,乃佛界摄取众生界,众生界归佛界之意,即表示生佛不二之义),身体正直,将念安住于面前。他正念地吸气,正念地呼气。


"吸气长时,他了知:'我吸气长';呼气长时,他了知:'我呼气长'。吸气短时,他了知:'我吸气短';呼气短时,他了知:'我呼气短'。他学:'我将觉知全身而吸气';他学:'我将觉知全身而呼气'。他学:'我将平静身行而吸气';他学:'我将平静身行而呼气'。


"他学:'我将觉知喜而吸气';他学:'我将觉知喜而呼气'。他学:'我将觉知乐而吸气';他学:'我将觉知乐而呼气'。他学:'我将觉知心行而吸气';他学:'我将觉知心行而呼气'。他学:'我将平静心行而吸气';他学:'我将平静心行而呼气'。


"他学:'我将觉知心而吸气';他学:'我将觉知心而呼气'。他学:'我将令心喜悦而吸气';他学:'我将令心喜悦而呼气'。他学:'我将令心专注而吸气';他学:'我将令心专注而呼气'。他学:'我将令心解脱而吸气';他学:'我将令心解脱而呼气'。


"他学:'我将观无常而吸气'(无常解释:随时在变化,无法永恒存在,无法永远保持不变);他学:'我将观无常而呼气'。他学:'我将观离欲而吸气';他学:'我将观离欲而呼气'。他学:'我将观灭而吸气';他学:'我将观灭而呼气'。他学:'我将观舍离而吸气';他学:'我将观舍离而呼气'。诸比丘,这就是如何修习入出息念,如何多修入出息念才能产生大果、大利益。


"诸比丘,如何修习入出息念?如何多修入出息念才能圆满四念处?诸比丘,当比丘吸气长时,他了知:'我吸气长';呼气长时,他了知:'我呼气长'。吸气短时,他了知:'我吸气短';呼气短时,他了知:'我呼气短'。他学:'我将觉知全身而吸气';他学:'我将觉知全身而呼气'。他学:'我将平静身行而吸气';他学:'我将平静身行而呼气'。在那时,诸比丘,比丘安住于身,随观身,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼。诸比丘,我说这入出息是身体的一种。因此,诸比丘,那时比丘安住于身,随观身,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼。


"诸比丘,当比丘学:'我将觉知喜而吸气';他学:'我将觉知喜而呼气'。他学:'我将觉知乐而吸气';他学:'我将觉知乐而呼气'。他学:'我将觉知心行而吸气';他学:'我将觉知心行而呼气'。他学:'我将平静心行而吸气';他学:'我将平静心行而呼气'。在那时,诸比丘,比丘安住于受,随观受,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼。诸比丘,我说这对入出息的专注观察是一种感受。因此,诸比丘,那时比丘安住于受,随观受,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼。


"诸比丘,当比丘学:'我将觉知心而吸气';他学:'我将觉知心而呼气'。他学:'我将令心喜悦而吸气';他学:'我将令心喜悦而呼气'。他学:'我将令心专注而吸气';他学:'我将令心专注而呼气'。他学:'我将令心解脱而吸气';他学:'我将令心解脱而呼气'。在那时,诸比丘,比丘安住于心,随观心,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼。诸比丘,我不说对失念、不正知者有入出息念的修习。因此,诸比丘,那时比丘安住于心,随观心,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼。


"诸比丘,当比丘学:'我将观无常而吸气';他学:'我将观无常而呼气'。他学:'我将观离欲而吸气';他学:'我将观离欲而呼气'。他学:'我将观灭而吸气';他学:'我将观灭而呼气'。他学:'我将观舍离而吸气';他学:'我将观舍离而呼气'。在那时,诸比丘,比丘安住于法,随观法,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼。他以智慧看清并善观察对贪欲和忧恼的舍离。因此,诸比丘,那时比丘安住于法,随观法,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼。


"诸比丘,这就是如何修习入出息念,如何多修入出息念才能圆满四念处。


"诸比丘,如何修习四念处?如何多修四念处才能圆满七觉支?诸比丘,当比丘安住于身,随观身,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼时,他的念已确立,不迷失。诸比丘,当比丘的念已确立,不迷失时,念觉支在他身上生起。他修习念觉支,念觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


"他如是安住于念时,以智慧审察、思量、深入观察那法。诸比丘,当比丘如是安住于念,以智慧审察、思量、深入观察那法时,择法觉支在他身上生起(择法觉支解释,见六百六十一章)。他修习择法觉支,择法觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


"当他以智慧审察、思量、深入观察那法时,他的精进被激发,不懈怠。诸比丘,当比丘以智慧审察、思量、深入观察那法,他的精进被激发,不懈怠时,精进觉支在他身上生起。他修习精进觉支,精进觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


"对于精进的人,无染的喜生起。诸比丘,当比丘精进而生起无染的喜时,喜觉支在他身上生起。他修习喜觉支,喜觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


"对于心中有喜的人,身体变得轻安,心也变得轻安。诸比丘,当比丘心中有喜,身体变得轻安,心也变得轻安时,轻安觉支在他身上生起。他修习轻安觉支,轻安觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


"对于身体轻安、感到愉悦的人,心变得专注。诸比丘,当比丘身体轻安、感到愉悦,心变得专注时,定觉支在他身上生起。他修习定觉支,定觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


"他善于旁观如是专注的心。诸比丘,当比丘善于旁观如是专注的心时,舍觉支在他身上生起。他修习舍觉支,舍觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


诸比丘,当比丘安住于受...安住于心...安住于法,随观法,精进、正知、正念,远离世间的贪欲和忧恼时,他的念已确立,不迷失。诸比丘,当比丘的念已确立,不迷失时,念觉支在他身上生起。他修习念觉支,念觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


他如是安住于念时,以智慧审察、思量、深入观察那法。诸比丘,当比丘如是安住于念,以智慧审察、思量、深入观察那法时,择法觉支在他身上生起。他修习择法觉支,择法觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


当他以智慧审察、思量、深入观察那法时,他的精进被激发,不懈怠。诸比丘,当比丘以智慧审察、思量、深入观察那法,他的精进被激发,不懈怠时,精进觉支在他身上生起。他修习精进觉支,精进觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


对于精进的人,无染的喜生起。诸比丘,当比丘精进而生起无染的喜时,喜觉支在他身上生起。他修习喜觉支,喜觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


对于心中有喜的人,身体变得轻安,心也变得轻安。诸比丘,当比丘心中有喜,身体变得轻安,心也变得轻安时,轻安觉支在他身上生起。他修习轻安觉支,轻安觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


对于身体轻安、感到愉悦的人,心变得专注。诸比丘,当比丘身体轻安、感到愉悦,心变得专注时,定觉支在他身上生起。他修习定觉支,定觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。


他善于旁观如是专注的心。诸比丘,当比丘善于旁观如是专注的心时,舍觉支在他身上生起。他修习舍觉支,舍觉支在他身上得到圆满的修习。诸比丘,这就是如何修习四念处,如何多修四念处才能圆满七觉支。


诸比丘,如何修习七觉支?如何多修七觉支才能圆满明与解脱?在这里,诸比丘,比丘修习念觉支,依止于远离、依止于离欲、依止于灭,导向舍离。他修习择法觉支...精进觉支...喜觉支...轻安觉支...定觉支...舍觉支,依止于远离、依止于离欲、依止于灭,导向舍离。诸比丘,这就是如何修习七觉支,如何多修七觉支才能圆满明与解脱。"


世尊说了这番话。那些比丘满怀欢喜,欣然接受世尊的教导。


入出息念经完。

   144. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde sambahulehi abhiññātehi abhiññātehi therehi sāvakehi saddhiṃ– āyasmatā ca sāriputtena āyasmatā ca mahāmoggallānena āyasmatā ca mahākassapena āyasmatā ca mahākaccāyanena āyasmatā ca mahākoṭṭhikena āyasmatā ca mahākappinena āyasmatā ca mahācundena āyasmatā ca anuruddhena āyasmatā ca revatena āyasmatā ca ānandena, aññehi ca abhiññātehi abhiññātehi therehi sāvakehi saddhiṃ.

   Tena kho pana samayena therā bhikkhū nave bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti. Appekacce therā bhikkhū dasapi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū vīsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū tiṃsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū cattārīsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti. Te ca navā bhikkhū therehi bhikkhūhi ovadiyamānā anusāsiyamānā uḷāraṃ pubbenāparaṃ visesaṃ jānanti.

   145. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā tadahuposathe pannarase pavāraṇāya puṇṇāya puṇṇamāya rattiyā bhikkhusaṅghaparivuto abbhokāse nisinno hoti. Atha kho bhagavā tuṇhībhūtaṃ tuṇhībhūtaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ anuviloketvā bhikkhū āmantesi– “āraddhosmi, bhikkhave, imāya paṭipadāya; āraddhacittosmi, bhikkhave, imāya paṭipadāya. Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhiyyosomattāya vīriyaṃ ārabhatha appattassa pattiyā, anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya. Idhevāhaṃ sāvatthiyaṃ komudiṃ cātumāsiniṃ āgamessāmī”ti. Assosuṃ kho jānapadā bhikkhū– “bhagavā kira tattheva sāvatthiyaṃ komudiṃ cātumāsiniṃ āgamessatī”ti. Te jānapadā bhikkhū sāvatthiṃ osaranti bhagavantaṃ dassanāya. Te ca kho therā bhikkhū bhiyyosomattāya nave bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti. Appekacce therā bhikkhū dasapi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū vīsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti appekacce therā bhikkhū tiṃsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti, appekacce therā bhikkhū cattārīsampi bhikkhū ovadanti anusāsanti. Te ca navā bhikkhū therehi bhikkhūhi ovadiyamānā anusāsiyamānā uḷāraṃ pubbenāparaṃ visesaṃ jānanti.

   146. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā tadahuposathe pannarase komudiyā cātumāsiniyā puṇṇāya puṇṇamāya rattiyā bhikkhusaṅghaparivuto abbhokāse nisinno hoti. Atha kho bhagavā tuṇhībhūtaṃ tuṇhībhūtaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ anuviloketvā bhikkhū āmantesi – “apalāpāyaṃ, bhikkhave, parisā; nippalāpāyaṃ, bhikkhave, parisā; suddhā sāre patiṭṭhitā. Tathārūpo ayaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhusaṅgho; tathārūpā ayaṃ, bhikkhave, parisā yathārūpā parisā āhuneyyā pāhuneyyā dakkhiṇeyyā añjalikaraṇīyā anuttaraṃ puññakkhettaṃ lokassa. Tathārūpo ayaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhusaṅgho; tathārūpā ayaṃ, bhikkhave, parisā yathārūpāya parisāya appaṃ dinnaṃ bahu hoti, bahu dinnaṃ bahutaraṃ.    147. “Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe arahanto khīṇāsavā vusitavanto katakaraṇīyā ohitabhārā anuppattasadatthā parikkhīṇabhavasaṃyojanā sammadaññāvimuttā – evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe pañcannaṃ orambhāgiyānaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ parikkhayā opapātikā tattha parinibbāyino anāvattidhammā tasmā lokā– evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe. Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ parikkhayā rāgadosamohānaṃ tanuttā sakadāgāmino sakideva imaṃ lokaṃ āgantvā dukkhassantaṃ karissanti– evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe tiṇṇaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ parikkhayā sotāpannā avinipātadhammā niyatā sambodhiparāyanā– evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe.

   “Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe catunnaṃ satipaṭṭhānānaṃ bhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe. Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe catunnaṃ sammappadhānānaṃ bhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti …pe… catunnaṃ iddhipādānaṃ… pañcannaṃ indriyānaṃ… pañcannaṃ balānaṃ… sattannaṃ bojjhaṅgānaṃ… ariyassa aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa bhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti– evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe. Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe mettābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti… karuṇābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti… muditābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti… upekkhābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti… asubhabhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti… aniccasaññābhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti– evarūpāpi, bhikkhave, santi bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe. Santi, bhikkhave, bhikkhū imasmiṃ bhikkhusaṅghe ānāpānassatibhāvanānuyogamanuyuttā viharanti. Ānāpānassati, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṃsā. Ānāpānassati, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulīkatā cattāro satipaṭṭhāne paripūreti. Cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā bahulīkatā satta bojjhaṅge paripūrenti. Satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā bahulīkatā vijjāvimuttiṃ paripūrenti.

   148. “Kathaṃ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati kathaṃ bahulīkatā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṃsā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā. So satova assasati satova passasati.

   “Dīghaṃ vā assasanto ‘dīghaṃ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, dīghaṃ vā passasanto ‘dīghaṃ passasāmī’ti pajānāti; rassaṃ vā assasanto ‘rassaṃ assasāmī’ti pajānāti, rassaṃ vā passasanto ‘rassaṃ passasāmī’ti pajānāti; ‘sabbakāyapaṭisaṃvedī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘sabbakāyapaṭisaṃvedī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘passambhayaṃ kāyasaṅkhāraṃ assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘passambhayaṃ kāyasaṅkhāraṃ passasissāmī’ti sikkhati.

   “Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ‘aniccānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘aniccānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘virāgānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘virāgānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘nirodhānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘nirodhānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; ‘paṭinissaggānupassī assasissāmī’ti sikkhati, ‘paṭinissaggānupassī passasissāmī’ti sikkhati; dhammesu dhammānupassī, bhikkhave, tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ. So yaṃ taṃ abhijjhādomanassānaṃ pahānaṃ taṃ paññāya disvā sādhukaṃ ajjhupekkhitā hoti. Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, dhammesu dhammānupassī tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ.

   “Evaṃ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati evaṃ bahulīkatā cattāro satipaṭṭhāne paripūreti.

   150. “Kathaṃ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā kathaṃ bahulīkatā satta bojjhaṅge paripūrenti? Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ, upaṭṭhitāssa tasmiṃ samaye sati hoti asammuṭṭhā. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno upaṭṭhitā sati hoti asammuṭṭhā, satisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti. Satisambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, satisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “So tathāsato viharanto taṃ dhammaṃ paññāya pavicinati pavicayati parivīmaṃsaṃ āpajjati. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathāsato viharanto taṃ dhammaṃ paññāya pavicinati pavicayati parivīmaṃsaṃ āpajjati, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “Tassa taṃ dhammaṃ paññāya pavicinato pavicayato parivīmaṃsaṃ āpajjato āraddhaṃ hoti vīriyaṃ asallīnaṃ. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno taṃ dhammaṃ paññāya pavicinato pavicayato parivīmaṃsaṃ āpajjato āraddhaṃ hoti vīriyaṃ asallīnaṃ, vīriyasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, vīriyasambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, vīriyasambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “Āraddhavīriyassa uppajjati pīti nirāmisā. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno āraddhavīriyassa uppajjati pīti nirāmisā, pītisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, pītisambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, pītisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “Pītimanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pītimanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “Passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaṃ samādhiyati. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaṃ samādhiyati, samādhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, samādhisambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, samādhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “So tathāsamāhitaṃ cittaṃ sādhukaṃ ajjhupekkhitā hoti. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathāsamāhitaṃ cittaṃ sādhukaṃ ajjhupekkhitā hoti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   151. “Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vedanāsu …pe… citte… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ, upaṭṭhitāssa tasmiṃ samaye sati hoti asammuṭṭhā. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno upaṭṭhitā sati hoti asammuṭṭhā, satisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, satisambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, satisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “So tathāsato viharanto taṃ dhammaṃ paññāya pavicinati pavicayati parivīmaṃsaṃ āpajjati.    “Āraddhavīriyassa uppajjati pīti nirāmisā. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno āraddhavīriyassa uppajjati pīti nirāmisā, pītisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, pītisambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, pītisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “Pītimanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno pītimanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, passaddhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “Passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaṃ samādhiyati. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaṃ samādhiyati, samādhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, samādhisambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, samādhisambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati.

   “So tathāsamāhitaṃ cittaṃ sādhukaṃ ajjhupekkhitā hoti. Yasmiṃ samaye, bhikkhave, bhikkhu tathāsamāhitaṃ cittaṃ sādhukaṃ ajjhupekkhitā hoti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṃ tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo tasmiṃ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripūriṃ gacchati. Evaṃ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā evaṃ bahulīkatā satta sambojjhaṅge paripūrenti.

   152. “Kathaṃ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaṅgā kathaṃ bahulīkatā vijjāvimuttiṃ paripūrenti Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu satisambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti vivekanissitaṃ virāganissitaṃ nirodhanissitaṃ vossaggapariṇāmiṃ. Dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti …pe… vīriyasambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… pītisambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… passaddhisambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… samādhisambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṃ bhāveti vivekanissitaṃ virāganissitaṃ nirodhanissitaṃ vossaggapariṇāmiṃ. Evaṃ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaṅgā evaṃ bahulīkatā vijjāvimuttiṃ paripūrentī”ti.

   Idamavoca bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti.
