有个时候,佛陀住在一个名叫那轧拉迦的城市中,有一天,阿难尊者来到佛陀的住所,他顶礼佛陀后,就在一旁坐下,阿难尊者对佛陀说:“世尊,与善良的人在一起,与经常做善事的人在一起,与善人做好朋友,修行就成功了一半,另一半要靠自己的努力,是这样吗?”
佛陀说:“阿难!不是这样的,与善良的人在一起,与经常做善事的人在一起,与善人做好朋友是修行成功的全部。为什么这样说呢?因为与善良的人在一起,与经常做善事的人在一起,与善人做好朋友必定会被这些善良的人影响而去做善事,去修习八正道(八正道解释,见第十八章),必定会以这些善人作为榜样去经常修习八正道。
当修行人与善良的人在一起,与经常做善事的人在一起,与善人做好朋友的时候,就会耳濡目染的去修习正见、正志、正语、正业、正命、正方便、正念、正定,这八种正道(八正道解释,见第十八章),这就能让修行人远离胡思乱想、混乱的心态,远离恶法、邪法,亲近善法、正法,让修行人的内心平静、安宁、寂静。这样就能让修行人熄灭、平息贪欲、渴爱,灭尽烦恼和痛苦,放下一切的执着和挂念,到达圆满清净的境界。
阿难,修行人与善良的人在一起,与经常做善事的人在一起,与善人做好朋友的时候,他们就是这样修习八正道的。
所以,阿难,如来说:「与善良的人在一起,与经常做善事的人在一起,与善人做好朋友是修行成功的全部。」
阿难,与如来做好朋友,就能从如来这里学习到解脱的智慧,由此从出生、衰老、死亡、忧愁、悲伤、苦闷、忧虑等等烦恼和痛苦中解脱出来。阿难,出生不仅指婴孩的出生,还指各种行为、言语、念想的生起,这些也叫做出生;衰老不仅指物质身体的衰老,物质事物的衰败,还指感受、念想、行为、认识、分别、判断的消退,这些也叫做衰老;死亡不仅指物质身体的死亡,物质事物的灭亡、消失,还指感受、念想、行为、认识、分别、判断的灭没、消失。与如来为伴,与如来做好朋友就能开启解脱的智慧,从出生、衰老、死亡、忧愁、悲伤、苦闷、忧虑等等循环往复生起的烦恼和痛苦中解脱出来。阿难,你应该认真去体会一下「与善良的人在一起,与经常做善事的人在一起,与善人做好朋友是修行成功的全部。」这句话的法理。”
佛陀说法后,阿难尊者再次的顶礼佛陀,随喜赞叹佛陀说法的无量功德,并按着佛陀所说的法去修行。

2. Evaṃ me sutaṃ– ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sakyesu viharati nagarakaṃ nāma sakyānaṃ nigamo. Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṃ etadavoca– “upaḍḍhamidaṃ, bhante, brahmacariyaṃ, yadidaṃ– kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā”ti.
“Mā hevaṃ, ānanda, mā hevaṃ, ānanda! Sakalamevidaṃ, ānanda, brahmacariyaṃ, yadidaṃ– kalyāṇamittatā kalyāṇasahāyatā kalyāṇasampavaṅkatā. Kalyāṇamittassetaṃ, ānanda, bhikkhuno pāṭikaṅkhaṃ kalyāṇasahāyassa kalyāṇasampavaṅkassa– ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ bhāvessati, ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ bahulīkarissati.
